    I used to do single chin-up with 220lbs on the belt and those days I had approximately 27minutes 5K, now I'm in sub20min 5K shape and can't do more than 130-150lbs chin-up. Running 7days in the week without additional time for proper gym work certainly melt the muscles.

    What do you think about strength training exercises for cardio. For example I found out when I do my pistol squats with 10 reps left, 10 reps right, 10 reps left,... without a break my heart rate goes crazy like 190 beats per minutes after a couple of minutes and my legs are burning as well. Normally I still fail at some point because of the muscle burn not the cardio aspect. But still the heart rate is crazy high similar to doing a fast run.

    Hi Coach Greg! I have my first bodybuilding show in September and I will be competing in the bikini category. Running seems to be the only cardio I can bring myself to do for a long amount of time (been a competitive long distance runner since 7th grade). Do you think this will have a severe affect on my performance as a bikini competitor?

    Aye so I swam my whole life and am trying to get competitive again at a collegic level. I also weigh 235-240 pounds maybe like 18-20% body fat. Probably less idk hahaha. I naturally would say I hold on to muscle. What should I do to continue building but be fast enough in the pool?

    Na it's just another activity that might take away from your power to build to be bulky. A tired man with creaky knees might not squat hard that's all and the difference between mega size in months is hard effort often often.

    Running and weightlifting was much more harder to do than I expected. I had to make a choice at what I want to focus on more since I just cannot go nuts on both. Especially leg days, holy shit how fcked up I felt on leg days. I just run 2-3 times per week now, 2-3 miles each time. I found that it is perfect amount for me, 3 running days and 2 leg days.

    Great advice at the end Coach. I like running/biking, but also want to build a bit of muscle (upper body specially). So just separating them in the morning, and at the afternoon could help me achieve this. Also, the diet is quite important. I must add a bit more calories, specially protein, so I don't smoke the muscles.

    Good vid, I think it is also worth mentioning that hypertrophy and aerobic adaptations use conflicting pathways (mTor and PCG1a) so if you go for a run straight after a leg sesh, you are compromising that size gains! That's a simplification of course, but worth digging deeper if one's interested.

    Running on grass or sand, as opposed to pavement is also really good for building up your ankles. Boxers do it to help train lateral movement.

    I alternate days for gym and running. I do both 3 times a week and rest one day a week. My calves are the most defined muscle I have, which i believe is due to my one year of running. I never question you Greg, but just this once i gotta say it just doesn't make any sense to me how i could lose muscle above my waist, when the muscle that is getting strained and exercised the most during running is becoming my leanest, most defined muscle.

    except you aren't accounting for the target audience of Nick's video. Somebody is who approaching the limits of genetic potential would already know all that. The video is meant for newer lifters/running that haven't reach the level where they would have trade-offs in their physique and speed. You can't use professionals to draw that comparison when the video is meant for newer lifters trying to learn.

    Before I joined the military I was running 6 miles a day 5 days a week. Weight training 1 hour a day 3 days a week. Was a machine. Then the military made me just disastrously out of shape in 6 months. You’d expect the opposite but no. They make it so difficult to stay in shape especially when stationed overseas lol.

    Nick is not a real runner. A 8th boy runner can run a 5 minute mile. In competitive running a 4:20-4:25 is solid mile. Hundreds high schoolers run that every year. A good older runner runs 5 minute mile. Hall is the most impressive real runner slash amateur bodybuilder I know of. Nick is a bad amateur bodybuilder and below average runner. Not impressed with either of his areas consider he a druggie. Hall is an ex elite pro runner and natural body builder who looks better than dad bod nick

    Shouldn't it really matter about what the target outcome for body performance should be? I don't think I want to run more than that's necessary for cardio training to help stretch my heart. Outside of that I think there's a lot of other better exercises to get performance out of the body for most other activities.

    I run and lift on the same day often. I prefer to lift in the morning and go for a trail run at night. And I run on leg day too, helps me learn how to train on tired legs. I'm doing Meg Squats Stronger by the Day program and getting some beefy legs even though I'm running long distance.

    No. Because cardio doesn't destroy muscle. If you go from lifting multiple hours a day, 6 days a week and go, "Ima gonna do some Triathlons now", you're going to lose muscle because you can't maintain your existing lifting schedule AND do the required swimming, biking, and running if your plan is to do better than just finish the race.

    Perfect explanation. I totally agree. Personally, I never liked running. However, I don't mind running on grass. Pavement and treadmills just hurt my knees too much. Not worth it and there are so many lower impact cardio options. Why run?

    I’m a 5k runner and do local races. My runs are between 10min-20min runs. After that I do my weight lifting. Can you lose muscle? Yes, but that depends on the training and nutrition. If I was more focus on mileage instead of timed then the potential loss of muscle is still plausible. In all honesty if your meals are solid then you’re probably not gonna lose so much muscle.

    The city i live in has become very unsafe after the pandemic. The crime rate is wayy wayy up. So running early in the morning isn’t an option anymore. It used to be my favourite thing to do but now I just have to do 30 mins on a stationary bike. Man, I wonder how bad my 5k time has gotten. The last time I ran I was doing sub 19 5ks.
